Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary

Located at Naharlagun near Itanagar, the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary has a wide variety of flora and fauna. It is also popular for having different species of orchids. Earlier the sanctuary was known as the Itanagar Reserve Forest and later renamed  as Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is one of the major tourist destinations of Itanagar.

Itanagar wildlife sanctuaryThe sanctuary covers an area of 140.30 sq km. The Itanagar wildlife sanctuary is bounded by Pam River in the east, Neorochi in the northeast, and to the south of the sanctuary lies Pachin. Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, is located within the sanctuary.

Flora and Fauna of Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary


The terrain of the Itanagar sanctuary is hilly. The foothills and valleys of the sanctuary are an exception.The hills are cut up by number of rivers and streams. The sanctuary has narrow valleys and steep hill slopes. The vegetation of the sanctuary can be categorized into tropical semi evergreen and wet evergreen. The primary feature of the sanctuary is heterogeneous mixture of the species with the merging of semi evergreen and evergreen forest into one another. In most parts of the sanctuary the patches of bamboo are common. A large section of the sanctuary falls under mixed bamboo forests. Bamboo species like dendrocalamus hamiltonii and bambusa palida are found in the forest. Tree species like amoora wallichii, duabanga grandiflora, magnolia spp toona ciliate, are also found in the area.  Different kind of grass like S.Spontamum, succharam procerum, Andropogon assimillis, Allpinia allugus, phramites karka are found in the forest.

The sanctuary is also the home of variety of wild animals like, beer, sambar, barking deer, tigers, panthers and elephant are found in the sanctuary. However, due to increasing human habitation in the sanctuary, the number of these animals is gradually decreasing. The magnificent Hornbill is also now less frequent in the area.

By Air: The Itanagar wildlife sanctuary is located in Itanagar. Lilabari airport in North Lakhimpur in Assam is the nearest air link. There are also regular flights from Guwahati to Itanagar. Pawan Hans helicopter service is available for the people from Guwahati to Itanagar.

By Rail: Itanagar does not have a railway station of its own, the nearest rail head is located in Harmuty in Assam.

By Road:
The sanctuary is very well connected by road to the other northeastern cities. Regular taxi and bus services are available from Tezpur, Guwahati, Itanagar and other places of Arunachal Pradesh to the sanctuary.
